Anastasios Skoufas

Visiting PhD Candidate

Anastasios Skoufas is a Visiting PhD Candidate and Researcher in public transit at the JTL Urban Mobility Lab at MIT, and a PhD Candidate and Researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He received his first master’s degree in surveying engineering (major in transport engineering) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2019), and his second master’s degree in Transport and Geoinformation Technology from KTH (2022).

During his PhD, Anastasios is working with public transit demand analytics with emphasis on passenger crowding, utilizing automated data sources (smart card data). Specifically, he worked with passenger groups, including 👨🏻‍🎓 school students, 🏗️ residents of newly developed areas, and 📸 visitors/tourists. He is particularly exploring how those passenger groups contribute to passenger crowding, as well as what policy makers can do towards more efficient public transit planning.

During his stay at the JTL Lab, Anastasios is working on the MISTI-funded project “Public Transit Crowding under Planned Special Events, Across Contexts”. In this project, the attendees of Planned Special Events (PSEs) (e.g., large concerts, festivals, sports events) are in the spotlight. In this joint research effort, Anastasios is working on i) estimating the impact of PSEs in terms of public transit crowding and ii) enhancing the system’s efficiency and passenger comfort through modeling the impacts of interventions involving transit agencies, transportation network companies, and micromobility operators.

Last, Anastasios loves traveling, swimming, and cooking nice food!

Research Interests: Transportation Modeling, Public Transportation, Travel Behaviour
